My constant search for subjects to photograph leads me to many interesting places. Whether it is going to a predetermined place to find a particular kind of subject matter for an ongoing series, or traveling around in search of inspiration from places and things that I discover, looking at the world for material for my photographic ideas is a constant pursuit for me.

Most of my work is a ‘personal documentary’, The style that I relate to most could be described as Formal Realism. The subject is a starting point to look and find visually enticing and evocative images. The visual qualities are what initially entice me to photograph a subject. The implicit meanings add significance on both personal and objective levels.

To me, art represent a beauty based on the purely visual sensations of the photos. Whether the scene is ‘found’ or set up, the colors and textures, the forms and composition, the spaces of views opening before me are my initial fascination.

The associations with the subject matter and the thoughts they may evoke add an extra depth and dimension. After exploring the visual elements in these pictures, my imagination is stimulated to wonder about the history, associations and meanings, objective or subjective, that are implied or revealed.

I am influenced by obsessively looking at things and places as well as finding inspiration in viewing others’ photographs and art. Listening to music, paying attention to the world, media, popular culture and my own personal experiences all combine to inform and evolve my own personal vision and ideas.

This website showcases the fine art photography portfolios of myself, Pittsburgh based photographer John Flatz.

The subject matter of the photos ranges from black and white still lifes and landscapes to color photographs of urban architecture, water and abandoned places to digitally constructed photo montages.

"My approach to photographing, and what I am visually enticed by, is to find some interesting pattern, composition or color combination in a scene. What the photograph is of is not that important. To me a rusty industrial object or an abandoned room with peeling paint can be just as interesting or beautiful as a colorful reflection of nature on a peaceful stream.

References to culture and the ability to evoke personal memories and feelings are also qualities that I aspire to include in my work. They can be can be found in many strange and fantastic places that I've had the chance to explore in search of new ideas for pictures.

The patterns of shadow and light, the colors and designs of our culture and the world that we live in, the power of an image to suggest ideas, those are the things that I try to capture in my photographs."
